2023 LEGISLATIVE SESSION: WEEK 5

The 5th week of the 2023 Regular Legislative Session was a short week as the House only met on Monday and Tuesday, and the Senate met only through Wednesday. Given the short week, there was minimal movement in legislation that is being tracked by the Florida Alliance of Children’s Councils & Trusts. However, on Tuesday, April 4th, HB 875 Dependent Children, by Representative Dana Trabulsy (R – St. Lucie) passed unanimously out of the House Civil Justice Subcommittee. Its Senate companion SB 1384 Legal Proceedings for Children, by Senator Colleen Burton (R – Lakeland) passed out of the Senate Committee on Children, Families, and Elder Affairs.

Family Resource Guide

Article Submission Request

Dear Community Partners,

The Children’s Services Council of Broward County produces a Family Resource Guide every year. We will soon begin production of the 2023-24 edition. The Guide includes a full listing of agencies and organizations that serve children and families in Broward, important information from the School Board of Broward County, informative articles on child safety, education, and development, as well as a full listing, by zip code, of childcare centers and the services they offer, produced in four languages.

Over 175,000 hard copies are distributed county-wide through schools, pediatric offices, markets, child-serving organizations, and community events. The Guide is also featured online, with articles shared with other local publications. If you would like to contribute an article on subjects related to Family Life, Health & Safety, Child Development, or Child Care, we invite you to submit a manuscript to the following specifications:

A.     700 – 800 words

B.     It must be “generic” to the subject, i.e., not an advertorial for any organization

C.     It must include a byline with the author’s qualifications

D.     As an epilogue, we are happy to include information specific to the author’s agency or organization.

Articles should be submitted no later than April 15th for consideration. As space is limited, we regret not being able to print every article submitted. We will endeavor, however, to share them on our website as part of our News feature. For more information or to submit an article for consideration, please contact Zoë Lewis, Community Engagement Manager, at 954-377-1116 or zlewis@cscbroward.org.

Thank you!

High-quality after-school programs promote positive youth development and offer a safe space where children and youth can learn, socialize, and explore their potential. Cindy Arenberg Seltzer, President and CEO of the CSC discuss the importance of these programs with Alice-Lydia Bird, Vice President of Youth Development for the YMCA of South Florida; Shawn Laser, Chief Program Director at Firewall Centers and Henri Crockett, co-founder and President of the Crocket Foundation.
