Broward Olympiad: Celebrate Summer Olympics
The 2016 Summer Olympics will kick off August 5, 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will be viewed on TV by millions around the world. In celebration of the Olympics and this year’s Olympic athletes, Broward County Library will host a number of Olympic- and fitness-themed events. All programs are free and open to the public.

Broward County Library is looking for volunteers. There are lots of ways you can use your skills to make a difference in the community and in someone’s life and the rewards are countless.
Unique volunteer opportunities include:

Most volunteer shifts are between two and four hours long and schedules are flexible.

Learn more about LGBT issues, including Pride Month, with LGBT Studies in Video, one of the great online resources you can access with your free Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library E-Card.
LGBT Studies in Video is a cinematic survey of the lives of lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual people and the cultural and political evolution of the LGBT community. This first-of-its-kind collection features award-winning documentaries, interviews, archival footage, and select feature films exploring LGBT history, gay culture and subcultures, civil rights, marriage equality, LGBT families, AIDS, transgender issues, religious perspectives on homosexuality, global comparative experiences, and other topics.

The collection will have cross-disciplinary relevance beyond LGBT courses, serving research and teaching in sociology, anthropology, psychology, counseling, history, and politics.
More Time for You! Eight Broward County Libraries Expand Service Hours
Eight Broward County Libraries Division locations have expanded service hours to allow the libraries to stay open additional day/s of the week. This expansion of hours is possible through the Library’s new service model, which features increased hours of library operation within the Library’s existing budget.
The Fort Lauderdale Branch Library is now open five days a week instead of only two, and the Century Plaza/Leon Slatin, Deerfield Beach Percy White, Imperial Point, Lauderhill Towne Centre, Pompano Beach, Riverland and Sunrise Dan Pearl branch libraries will all now be open six days a week instead of five. In the coming months, Broward County Libraries will offer expanded library hours at more locations under the new service model.

Branch Spotlight: Tamarac Branch

The Tamarac Branch is a library at the crossroads; it sits on the adjoining borders of Tamarac, Sunrise and Lauderhill. It is also at the crossroads of change, as it adapts to the needs of its surrounding communities, which are experiencing significant changes in demographics for age, ethnicity and population growth.
Historically one of the busiest branches, the Tamarac Branch started out as the West Broward Branch in March 1978. Located near many adult communities, the branch has always been heavily used by bestseller readers. As part of the 1999 Library Bond Program, Tamarac Branch and a local reading center were replaced in October 2003 by the current 30,000-square-foot building, the first library of its size in Broward County.
The collection holds well over 100,000 items in a variety of media, with an extensive DVD collection. The non-fiction collection is extremely large and covers subjects of interest to all age groups, including a wide selection of bestsellers. Large Print items and Spanish language material are also well represented. The branch maintains a sizable number of picture books and beginning readers for young children.
Programs are offered for all segments of the population. Free financial education workshops on topics such as Money Management, Credit Basics and Financial Recovery are hosted. Themed book discussions are a hallmark of the branch. Humorous mysteries, baseball mysteries, travel mysteries and Florida Women (Ivy Stranahan, Marjory Stoneman Douglas, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings) book discussions bring local readers together for lively discussions.

Other programs of special interest reflect the area’s ethnic diversity:English Café, Citizenship Preparation and the Yiddish Culture Club. In December for Chanukah there is an annual Klezmer concert of traditional Eastern European Jewish music. Adults can also take advantage of free computer instruction from OASIS, including special sessions like Introduction to Digital Photography.
Youth Services offers ongoing programs for young children, pre-teens and teens. Tamarac Branch is a Literacy Help Center that offers theHomework Help program for students in grades K-12. The Youth Services area has a bright and cheery story time room which is used for weekly toddler and preschool programs and for the extensive Summer Learning Program. The branch serves over a dozen area schools.
Tamarac Branch has a 100-seat multi-purpose meeting room, 50 computers for public use, a 24-seat computer lab, three tutoring rooms, a quiet study room and a young adult area. Two glass and ceramic tile murals adorn the walls.
